FIV-positive cats are often overlooked — but there’s no need to be afraid.
They can be just as loving, affectionate, and wonderful companions as any other cat.

Understanding FIV & Medical-Needs Cats
Myths, Facts & What You Need to Know

What Is FIV?

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a slow-progressing virus that affects a cat’s immune system. Many FIV-positive cats live long, happy, normal lives and may never show symptoms.

FIV is not a death sentence, and it is not a reason to rule out adoption.

Common Myths vs Medical Facts

Myth: FIV-positive cats are always sick

Medical Fact:
Most FIV-positive cats are clinically healthy for many years. With good nutrition, an indoor lifestyle, stress reduction, and regular vet care, many never develop serious illness.

Myth: FIV spreads easily

Medical Fact:
FIV is transmitted primarily through deep bite wounds, usually from serious fighting. It is not spread through:

  • Sharing food or water bowls

  • Grooming

  • Using the same litter tray

  • Sleeping near other cats

Calm, desexed FIV-positive cats can safely live with non-FIV cats in suitable homes.

Myth: FIV cats can’t live with other cats

Medical Fact:
FIV-positive cats can live successfully with other cats if they are non-aggressive, properly introduced, and desexed. Personality and household stability matter far more than FIV status.

Myth: FIV means a shorter lifespan

Medical Fact:
Many FIV-positive cats live just as long as FIV-negative cats. The virus progresses slowly, and quality of care plays a far greater role in lifespan than diagnosis alone.

Myth: FIV cats require expensive, constant treatment

Medical Fact:
Most FIV-positive cats do not need daily medication or specialised treatment. Routine vet checks, good diet, parasite prevention, and prompt treatment of infections are usually sufficient.

Medical Cats Beyond FIV – Important Education

What does “medical cat” mean?

A medical cat may have:

  • FIV or FeLV

  • Chronic conditions (e.g. allergies, IBD, arthritis)

  • Past injuries or amputations

  • Ongoing but manageable health needs

These conditions are often stable, treatable, and well understood.

Medical Cats Are Individuals

A diagnosis does not define a cat’s:

  • Personality

  • Affection level

  • Ability to bond

  • Quality of life

Many medical cats are playful, cuddly, and full of character.

What Medical Cats Usually Need
  • An indoor lifestyle

  • Reduced stress

  • Consistent routine

  • Regular veterinary check-ups

  • An adopter willing to monitor their health

In return, they offer deep companionship and loyalty.
- ALL of which you pets should already be recieving from their forever homes.
